The Scarlet Letter By Nathaniel Hawthorne

“Mother,” said little Pearl, “the sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom. . . . It will not flee from me, for I wear nothing on my bosom yet!” “Nor ever will, my child, I hope,” said Hester. “And why not, mother?” asked Pearl, stopping short. . . . “Will it not come of its own accord, when I am a woman grown?”

This quote is really important in the Scarlet Letter, because it just shows that Pearl knows that her mom is unhappy, and is curious to why she is wearing the letter and says that one day she too will have one. She isn't really sure of what exactly it means. I picked this quote because it goes to show that kids know what goes on around them.
